Dallas has returned to TV on TNT. You may not know this, but I grew up watching the original show. Now, I have every season on dvd.
It was classic delicious American drama. Or melodrama. Either works. And it was addictive.
Back in 2010, I started collecting the dvds and rewatching. I made it to season 11, when I got Dallas fatigue. I plan to get back to it this summer.
So I was delighted to tune in for the new version which focuses on J.R. and Bobby’s now-grown-up sons, John Ross and Christopher. It harkens back to the first season of Dallas where they focused on Bobby and J.R. and their wives and Mama and Jock.
I must confess, J.R. was a favorite of mine. I loved to hate him. Larry Hagman is back, reprising his best role ever.
The show is full of what made the original Dallas great–money, power, and rivalry all embedded in the backdrop of family. It’s on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. EST on TNT. I’m really excited to see where it goes this season.
I still remember when I was in elementary school, I complained about feeling tired and the school nurse asked, “What time did you go to sleep last night?”
I said, “Sometime after Dynasty.”
That was my second favorite show as a kid.

I never got into it as a kid when it was on TV, *ahem* when my parents were watching it, naturally.

I loved it back then and now. It’s fun to watch old shows and see the giant computers and car phones. The new Dallas focuses on the kids who are now in their 20s. I’ll watch anything Larry Hagman is in.

Once in a while you need to recharge your batteries, and there is something therapeutic about going back to childhood favorites. Star Trek does that for me. I can go years without watching it, and then I will run through a whole season or even a whole show while exercising. A few years ago I got the whole series of Rat Patrol and watched it with my kids.

Very true. Dallas had so many seasons it’s nice to go back there. The pace is slower than today’s shows but I appreciate that.

I do love Larry Hagman, starting with his “jeannie” days. who could resist? I did get tired of Dallas and have to admit I have no desire to catch this version. Given the ages of Bobby and JR, the kids should be in their late 30s, shouldn’t they? I know, I know. It’s television.

Me too! I loved I Dream of Jeannie as a kid. The writing on Dallas, err, had some bumps. But I wanted to see how it ended so I could get a better idea of how this new series began. LOL. The look like late 20s. Not numerically accurate but it’s something they do on TV.
Bobby looks good and Larry is still turning out a fantastic J.R.! I wasn’t loving the later seasons of Dallas, but it had a terrifically long run. 14 seasons on DVD. So I figured I’d see how they wrapped it up.

He was the show.
I think they realized what went wrong with the last few seasons of the original. Too many new characters. This one really focuses on the family just like the first few seasons of the original Dallas did.

I still remember the excitement over “Who shot J.R.” It was all anyone was talking about back then. I didn’t stick with the show very long, but boy was it a fixture for so many years.

I do too! Imagine if we’d had Facebook and Twitter back then? Dallas would have dominated the conversations.
My friend Linds was a Dynasty girl. I watched that too but Dallas was my favorite.

I can’t think of any other shows with such a long run. It started in the late 70s and ended in the early 90s. With two follow up made for tv movies in the late 90s.

There is nothing like a little nostalgic TV. I’ve done the same with Ally McBeal and Murder She Wrote. Just goes to show what an impact stories can have on our lives…

Golden Girls is another favorite of mine. The characters slip into your weekly routine and it’s nice to see them again years later.

Dallas was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I won’t be able to watch it these days, no time for TV, but I love knowing it’s back in full force again!
