Greetings from Kourtneyland

I can’t believe it’s mid July already! After I finished revisions on July 5th, Mom and I went back to Highwire Farm to celebrate. I met this lovely turkey. She was beautiful.

Mom delighted in the kangaroo hopping about. The one in the background actually photobombed her.

It was a gorgeous day and great to be outside.

It’s the first time I haven’t been revising or outlining in 9 months. But that’s not to say I’m not working.

I was up in Provincetown for a talk at their library on a “Peek Inside the Author Life” on July 10th.

That was 5 hours driving each way. Luckily Mom drove and Aunt Sue came along. We stayed a cute motel, The Cape Colony Inn.

I had an awesome audience. Highly attentive and great questions. One person even hugged me! Sold a few books too.

Ptown was gorgeous.

And lively.

I’ve been prepping for my 4 workshops in WI and IL at the end of the month and touching base with the venues to make sure everything is set. I packed my suitcase.  Sent out boxes of giveaways and event related stuff.

I’ve also been catching up on life stuff. Getting new glasses made and going swimming.

Even hanging out with Grandma H. She went rogue on me at the mall last week and sent me into an absolute panic. We separated because I had to go to Lenscrafters and she doesn’t walk that far. She promised to meet me at the bench at IHOP in 20 minutes. But she wasn’t there. I looked inside IHOP. Nope. I walked her whole route from Sears to IHOP 3 times. No sign of her.

Finally, I went over to mall security, fearing something happened to her. As I am giving him her name, she pops out of the bank. The bank she never mentioned going to. The bank that is not on her normal route in the mall. I ended up having an asthma flare.

The audiobook for Six Train is progressing. My narrator/producer did a great job on the first 15 minutes. We had a little misunderstanding where I provided line edits, when big picture feedback was expected. But we talked it through and I now know that line edits are not acceptable to audiobook narrators.

I emailed ACX to ask them to provide actual guidance on feedback on their website because all I had to go on was be as detailed as possible. They responded that they would look into it.

I had a couple concerns that my narrator and I are going to discuss via conference call on Monday. Baring any major issues, the audiobook should be done in late September/early October.

Six Train became a Readers’ Favorite Finalist in paranormal fiction. I am planning to attend the Miami Book Fair in November and sign books in their tent. Have to do all the logistics in August/September when I return.

I’ve been creating a new agent query list for my next YA novel, DM. I plan to start actively querying in August.

I’ve snuck out a few queries in June and July just to test the waters. I did get a partial request, so that’s something. A nice nudge of encouragement. I’ll plan to send 30-50 queries out in August. And see where it goes.

With The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts, I’m enjoying a brief breather. Then I’ve got line edits down the road and then copy edits. I’m still waiting on a publication date.

I will be on a blog break from July 24-August 6th. It’s just too hard to keep up on blogging when I’m doing the book tour. But I’ll be back in August with updates on my amazing two weeks in WI and IL.

This post is full of so much exciting news and updates. So glad to hear how well it’s all going. I can’t wait to meet up next week. The husband is out of town next week, so I’ve got some details to hammer down as far as the kids are concerned, but it should all work out. I’ll email you.

The turkey made me immediately think of Kai 🙂

    • Gwen, it feels like so much happened in 2 weeks. LOL. Thanks. Me too! Cool. Looking forward to seeing you.

LOL. Me too. She was a beautiful bird. And the owner told me she is rather sweet and follows him around.

Busy as always! Congrats on the Readers Fav finalist placement and good luck with your upcoming workshops. By the way, perhaps your next book could be titled: “The Wandering Grandma H.” 🙂

    • Thanks Carrie. I’m thinking of doing the Miami Book Fair this year. It seems like a great promo opportunity. LOL. Seriously, she’s a very independent lady but sometimes careless with the details. 🙂

  3. Good luck with the tour and the queries Kourtney. It strikes me that you get to see some wonderful places when you’re on tour that you wouldn’t maybe see otherwise. Provincetown looks gorgeous and a little quirky.

    • Thanks Andrea. I try to tack on some fun time in every tour spot. WI and IL are a bit fast paced, but we are planning to see the Great Lakes in person. 🙂 Provincetown is a really cool place. I’d definitely go back for fun anytime. 🙂

What a fun update post : ) Congratulations on the Readers Favorite placement. I love the kangaroo photobomb by the way, haha!

    • Thanks. I find out if I came in 1, 2, or 3 or honorable mention in September. Thrilled to be a finalist right now. 🙂 LOL. He hopped out of the picture and then as soon as Mom posed he totally photobombed her. 🙂

  5. An audiobook too? You are a busy gal! I giggled about the photobomb of your mom with the kangaroo 🙂

    • Yeah, that’s been in the works for a while. I found a great narrator, but she was booked 4-5 months up so we are just getting going on it. 🙂 We did too. You should see Mom’s face when he hops around. She lights up like a little kid.

I’m so happy to hear you were able to combine a fun break and a visit to Provincetown, which looks beautiful with your promotional work, and writing business in general. Enjoy the work, and some play on your book tour 🙂

    • Thanks. I do my best to use the promo trips as a chance to see a new place too. Provincetown is lovely. A long ride from home, but at least we didn’t have to fly. Which saves money. Thanks. Excited for this big book tour trip.

You’re one busy author. Are any of the books you’re editing the sequel to Six Train? I read the first and looking forward to another.

    • I do my best. 🙂 Unfortunately, not yet. The general rule with writing series is you have to sell the first before you write the second because if you never sell the first, you can’t sell the second. So my strategy was to get the first book of 3 separate series all drafted, revised and ready to sell. After Six Train was indie published, I had to focus on promoting it. Then I sold the YA novel, The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts and had contractual obligations with set deadlines for revisions for Harlequin. It made sense to squeeze in revisions on my next YA series when I had a couple months open. Right now, Six Train’s sequel has a scene by scene outline (it’s 50 pages long), but I haven’t had the 6 months necessary to get a draft done. I’m hoping to dig into that this fall/winter. Once it’s drafted, I have to put it through revisions, beta readers, and more revisions (that takes about a year). The I have to publish it myself which takes another 6 months. So it’s a couple years away from publishing. I wish I could get it out sooner, but I also want to make sure I deliver the absolute best book I can. 🙂

No need to reply, Kourtney – you certainly have your hands full! So glad to hear that your book tour is going so well, and that you’re getting the chance to do some things for Kourtney the lovely lady as well as Ms Kourtney Heintz, Award-winning author. 🙂
Looking forward to your updates when you return! ❤

    • I’ll do my best to reply up until wifi gets weird. 🙂 Thanks. Provincetown was a big adventure. Now, I’m excited to get back to WI. I don’t get to travel for pleasure anymore so I do try to sneak in some fun on my business trips. Can’t wait to share what happens over the next two weeks!

You are one busy girl this summer! Do take some time to enjoy the Midwest visit in those few hours when you’re not working!

    • I just drank cake vodka in the dark on a screened in porch. Does that count? Lol. I am going to savor my moments and work my bum off. 🙂 I was in the bathroom at dinner and got an idea for a scene with Kai in that bathroom. I really wanted to lock myself in and write it, but instead I took a bunch of pictures so I can write it later. I think the restaurant patrons might have been very annoyed otherwise. 😉

    Hi Kourt,

It is always to catch up with you (even when I am a little bit belated here)…
Thanks a bunch for sharing your experiences as a writer..
I loved your photo in Provincetown at their library ❤
Best wishes and happy week to you,
    Aquileana 😛

  11. Pete Denton says:

I just love the idea of the audio book. Sounds great!

  12. I hope the new book is all coming to schedule Kourtney, and you look very proficient in your photos.. 🙂 Wishing you a fabulous rest to the Month.. And Loved my catch up again..
    Hugs Sue xox

    • Thanks Sue. I’m waiting on Harlequin for the next round of edits on the YA novel. For the sequel to Six Train, I’m working on changes to the outline and hope to be drafting in the next week or two. 🙂 Aw thanks. August is speeding by. Great to catch up!
